Sorry for sounding so mean in a book review, but I was totally bummed after finishing the little book on 3D printing. I am not sure what the authors want to achieve with this book. 3D printing in only 5 chapters and 32 pages?! They barely scratched the surface of the topic. Below is the missing table of contents in the preview -Chapter 1: What's a 3D Printer?Chapter 2: How People Are Using 3D PrintersChapter 3: 3D Printing NowChapter 4: Designing Your Own ObjectChapter 5: Where Can I Find 3D Printers?Obviously, you can discover more than what's covered in the book online by yourself if you do a little bit research on 3D printing. Luckily, I borrowed the book through my library for free and didn't pay $9.99 for it.

I borrowed this book from the library since there was no online preview.What I liked about this book: bare bones information about 3D printing. Didn't have a lot of fluff like a history lesson on the Industrial Revolution or the biography of the author. Had a few useful references for digging further into the topic. Great book for K12 library.What I didn't like about the book: Although I had no objection to the brevity of the book, I think it could have been an ebook, with a way cheaper pricetag.

Jake and Callahan find the Dixie Pig and discover a chamber filled with horros they can't imagine. "Mia" gives birth to her chap and Jake follows in hopes of saving her. Roland and Eddie are on their own journey still trapped in the "real" world trying to find a way to Susannah and save her. She's been taken to a birthing room of sorts where, once she gives birth to Mordred, her life will be forfeit. All of this occurs in the first 40 pages of the novel and with 805 more to go you know that King has quite a tale to tell. I enjoyed Michael Whelan's illustrations and, while I liked all the illustrators that worked on the preceding books, Whelan's have always been the best representation to me of King's world. It's only fitting that he should illustrate the last book since he illustrated the first as well.As to the fate of Randall Flagg, well I didn't find it to be fitting for an ongoing character but it did seem to work within the context of the book. For those of you looking for plot spoilers look elsewhere I'm not a fan of this practice when it comes to books so you'll have to cast your vote for someone else if that's the case. I'd agree that the book does ramble on a bit too long. However, King never has been known for his brevity.I both satisfied and dissatisfied with The Dark Tower. The conclusion was satisfying in the same way that a terrific meal can be as you push your away from the kitchen table. The dissatisfaction arises from the fact that you know the meal is over and maybe every dish did not turn out exactly as you had wanted it to but, overall, things were quite tasty. The good news is that there's always leftovers in the form of the central books and all the connecting stories. So if you haven't jumped into the offshoots of The Dark Tower series by all means do so. Most of the books that are connected are terrific so you'll be able to relive little moments just like the leftovers from a memorable meal.The end of King's tale isn't perfect. Does it end exactly the way I wanted it to? No but it does provide more closure than I expected. On the other hand, the end seemed a bitter pill to swallow compared to the previous 800 pages. Maybe King was just exhausted and couldn't come up with a more satisfying ending for himself. Maybe he felt this literary trick was the best way to conclude the series which was his bid for an epic tale. Either way, the series and the book is, as a whole, satisfying with some moments I didn't care for.

The only complaint I could possibly make is that the book came without a dust jacket. Big deal. Otherwise it is in excellent condition & may well never have been read. So that's that for the condition.I've been a Stephen King fan since I was technically too young to read his books (I first read "The Shining" at 5 1/2), but the Dark Tower series has always been one of my favourite things. Yeah, people complain that it was too long between books and that each book was too stylistically different and that they just plain don't like what happens in a book, but here's one 'constant reader' who has nary a complaint. I have loved the whole series and this the final book is absolutely perfect. I read it cover to cover in one sitting and just sat there smiling. If you're anything of a Stephen King fan, I strongly recommend the Dark Tower series. And if you've read all of them but this one, shame on you! Get it right now and start reading! You will not be disappointed!

It's hard to review this book, because it's the end of the road. I've reached the clearing at the end of the path so to speak. I feel like I have to review the journey as a whole, and that's tough. It's been a hell of a ride. Before the Gunslinger I hadn't really picked up a long series like this in quite a while. In light of that, I decided to space the series out, and really make it last. That turned out to be an excellent decision on my part, because it made the journey that much longer, and that much sweeter. Roland's quest for the Tower was a long one. Full of excitement, horror, sacrifice, love, darkness.. and light. And I think Stephen King wrapped up the ending perfectly. I loved it. I couldn't rate The Dark Tower anything less than five stars after finishing it. Full-body chills were achieved and a good portion of time was spent staring at the wall in front of me. It honestly made me want to crack open the Gunslinger and take the trip again.I'm sure that someday I will.

With The Dark Tower movies beginning to take shape, it seems logical to assume there will be a resurgence of people wanting to see what these books are all about. I started Book 1 about 5 months ago and Roland's journey just ended for me (several minutes ago, in fact!). You're most likely going to read horrible reviews on here, how Stephen King dropped the ball and this book is a hopeless letdown. My personal opinion of the matter is this book is quite simply the best of the entire series. The pacing, revelations, surprises, and twists absolutely never let up. From traveling under Caste Discordia to having dinner with Dandelo, I was completely enthralled from beginning to end. The last 20 pages or so of the book are your call to make what you will of how everything wraps up. Personally, it isn't how I wanted the story to end, but that in no way devalues the absolutely brilliant 99.9% of it. This series is my adult "Harry Potter" series. I will cherish these stories and will be reading Roland's journey to the tower again for you ears to come.

It's been a long time since I first read the Dark Tower. It was originally a wait I thought would not end, but thankfully it did and that was now well over 10 years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the series again over the last few months. It is a long read and a time was slow and hard going. But it is always worth it.The last book if the series is arguably its best. I always appreciated that the loose ends were tied adequately. For me that was important at the time and I found it satisfying again. This last story is full of the twists and turns you come to expect as you journey to the tower. It is final and at time pulls hard on the heart.This is a great read. A great way to finish the epic story of Roland and the quest for the Dark Tower.

One of my favorite books, I have read it so many times over the years. The author's insight and beautiful narrative is nothing short of enchanting.

The centerpiece of this book is the chapter 'The Genesis of Narnia,' a useful summary of the creation process behind the wonderful Narnia books. Downing cherry-picked most of this information from the thousands of pages of letters, essays, nonfiction books and biographies published by and about C.S. Lewis. He also includes a few new observations not published elsewhere, revealing for instance that the country of Calormen featured in 'The Horse and His Boy' was based primarily on the 'Arabian Nights' collection (his source was an unpublished letter from Lewis). Downing's book also includes a brief biography of Lewis and chapters on Narnia's spiritual vision, moral psychology, classical and medieval elements, an exploration of Narnian names, literary artistry, and a helpful appendix on Narnian allusions which might be obscure to modern or non-British readers.'Into the Wardrobe' becomes frustrating when Downing speaks from his position as a published author, college professor and "C.S. Lewis expert" to forward some sketchy or inaccurate claims, in particular: (1) that Rudolf Otto coined the word 'Numinous,' (2) that the Narnia books are not allegory, and (3) that C.S. Lewis disliked source criticism.1. Downing claims that Rudolph Otto coined the term 'numinous,' which is not true: According to the Oxford English Dictionary the word numinous was coined in 1640 A.D., to mean "the sense of nearness of the divine," and it still means precisely the same thing today. It is true that Otto suggested in his book 'Idea of the Holy' that since God is all-powerful we puny humans must automatically regard him as terrifying despite his benevolence, and this conception of the numinous was influential on Lewis and several other intellectuals of the time ("Safe?" said Mr. Beaver. "...Who said anything about [Aslan] being safe? 'Course he isn't safe. But he's good"). However, if you look up numinous in any modern dictionary, you'll see that Otto's attempt to globally update the word's definition was unsuccessful. Anyway, even if Otto had managed to modify the meaning of 'numinous,' that is simply not what it means to coin a word. For example: if I redefined the word "God" in this Amazon review to mean "a giant purple frog," would that mean I had "coined" the word God?2. Downing states that Narnia is not an allegory because (a) it does not always have one-to-one allegorical correspondences, and (b) Lewis did not encourage his readers to think of Narnia as an allegory, but as a "supposal" (as in "Let us suppose that..."). To the first point, it is a fundamental misunderstanding of allegory to believe that a piece must be restricted to one-to-one correspondences to qualify as allegory. Consider Edmund Spenser's 'The Faerie Queene,' one of the most-referenced allegories in the English language and a special favorite of C.S. Lewis. On page 321 of 'The Allegory of Love,' Lewis mentions that the Faerie Queene has allegorical correspondences to both the Christian virtues and politics. Queen Elizabeth alone corresponds to at least three different characters (from Wikipedia's Faerie Queene page):"[Queen] Elizabeth...appears most prominently in her guise as Gloriana, the Faerie Queene herself; but also in Books III and IV as the virgin Belphoebe, daughter of Chrysogonee and twin to Amoret, the embodiment of womanly married love; and perhaps also, more critically, in Book I as Lucifera, the 'maiden queen' whose brightly lit Court of Pride masks a dungeon full of prisoners."While it's true that Lewis encouraged a child correspondent to think of Narnia as a "supposal" rather than allegory, is it perhaps the case that Lewis felt that it is proper in romance (which today we would call 'fantasy') for the inner meaning to be carefully hidden?"As is proper in romance, the inner meaning is carefully hidden." -C.S. Lewis in a letter to Arthur Greaves (18 July 1916)Lewis referred to the hidden element in fantasy stories as the 'kappa element' (kappa meaning hidden), and he held a lifelong enthusiasm for that subtle hidden meaning behind words which can express "things that can't be directly told," even stating in his book 'Spenser's Images of Life' that "all great truths should be veiled." Carefully keeping Narnia's allegorical inner meaning hidden does not disqualify it as allegory.3. Downing wrote that "Lewis generally disliked source criticism, the interpretive approach that assumes major characters and images in a story can usually be traced to something in an author's life or reading habits." This is very misleading. Lewis held a lifelong fascination with what he (in common with most English-speaking literary scholars of his time) called quellenforschung (German Quelle, source + Forschung, research), the study of tracing sources for a literary work. In his introduction to 'George MacDonald; An Anthology,' Lewis wrote: "I am a don, and "source-hunting" (Quellenforschung) is perhaps in my [bone] marrow." On page 375 of 'Letters of C.S. Lewis,' the author writes to praise Charles A. Brady for being "the first of my critics so far who has really read and understood all my books," specifically stating "The Quellenforschung is good." Many of Lewis' scholarly books, in particular his 'Allegory of Love,' include facts and guesses on the literary sources informing his favorite authors on nearly every page. It's true that Lewis wrote a cautionary essay called 'Psycho-Analysis and Literary Criticism' on the dangers of mistaking an armchair psychological diagnosis of the author for literary criticism. He was also wearied by quellenforschung done badly, as when a few critics misguidedly assumed The Lord of the Rings had anything to do with the atomic bomb. Neither fact changes the reality that C.S. Lewis held a lifelong fascination with identifying the literary sources for his favorite books.Casual readers may come away from Downing's book misled into believing that identifying the Narnian books as "mere" allegory, or acknowledging that Lewis loved hunting down the literary sources for his own favorite stories, would somehow diminish his achievement. The reality is almost completely the reverse: his Narnian stories have such profound power to convey a sense of the numinous *because* Lewis was able to identify, distill and revivify the allegorical insights of John Bunyan, Dante, Edmund Spenser, George MacDonald, Boethius and his other literary heroes.

C.S Lewis is most widely known today for his children's tales, The Chronicles of Narnia. However, David C. Downing notes in Into the Wardrobe: C.S. Lewis and the Narnia Chronicles that, "some of his contemporaries were shocked when the eminent C.S. Lewis started writing children's stories." (XIV) Lewis had written some fiction previously, a sci-fi trilogy, The Great Divorce, and some poetry, as well as some notable literary work, but not fiction for children. So when the Chronicles began to be written, what emerged was not merely fairy tales for children, but a magnificent composition of classical, medieval, and modern ideas filtered through the creative theological imagination of C.S. Lewis.Into the Wardrobe explores the background of Narnia in the life and thought of C.S. Lewis. As should any book of this nature, Dr. Downing begins in Chapter 1 with a biography of Lewis. In Chapter 2 we are introduced to the writing of the Chronicles in the order they were composed. Here Dr. Downing offers a summary of each book and some explanations of their origins, including the lost Lefay fragment that was a potential beginning of The Magician's Nephew.The last five chapters examine the content of the series categorically. Chapter 3 takes on the "spiritual vision" of the Chronicles. The spirituality of the series is seen through the perspective of Aslan, who is envisioned as "a Numinous Being," "Supremely Good," "Creator," "Co-Sufferer," "Redeemer," "Comfort and Guide" and "Judge." Next, Dr. Downing examines is the morality taught throughout the series through Edmund's failures, technology, and the virtues of honesty, empathy, privacy, and trust.Chapter 5 looks into the classical and medieval elements found in the Chronicles including hierarchy, chivalry, magic, and astrology. For those who have wondered where Lewis might have gotten the names for his characters, this is described in detail in Chapter 6. The final chapter deals with the literary legacy of the series and grapples with a few of the criticisms that have been made of them and Lewis himself.Into the Wardrobe was almost consistently a stimulating read. My favorite chapters were the one on the spiritual roles of Aslan and the one about classical and medieval elements. For the former, as with most Narnia fans I suspect, I can never get enough of informed Aslan discussion. For the latter, the scholarly work of Lewis in classical and medieval studies is usually only a footnote in what I've read. Dr. Downing shows that this area of Lewis' life and study is just as important as the rest and played an influential role in the formation of the Chronicles. The only chapter I didn't care much for was the one on Narnian names. Perhaps due to the subject at hand, at a couple instances I felt like I was reading a genealogy in the book of NumbersDavid Downing offers us a thought-provoking behind-the-scenes look at what went into the writing of The Chronicles of Narnia. His knowledge of the subject matter and accessible writing style make this book an educational and enjoyable read at the same time.

I never write reviews but I felt compelled to write one for this book. I graduated college in 2005 with a Business major. I decided to go back to grad school for education and found out that the Praxis was a requirement before admission. I had NO idea where to start or what would be covered on the test. I had one month to study. I bought the Praxis II Secrets book for $60. I got so overwhelmed by the amount of material in the book and the way that the questions were set up, that I questioned going back to school all together. I went back to Amazon and thought i would give this book a chance. I was hesitant because I saw reviews on this book from back in 2011 and thought surely this book would be out of date and the material would not still be covered on my test. Plus the Kindle book was under $10, that showed it wouldn't help me much, right? Wrong! I ONLY studied the info in this test and PASSED my first try. I bought this book about 8 days before my test and passed each subject.I needed a 165 in English and i scored 196. Needed a 157 in Math and scored 180. Needed 144 in Science and scored 179. Needed 142 in Social Studies and scored 175. I could not be more pleased with this book. PLEASE DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE LOW PRICE. This book rocks and the questions are VERY similar to what is on the actual PRAXIS. Thank you Russell Kahn for writing this. It really helped me!

I recently took my elementary praxis exam and this was the only study guide I used. I passed 2/4 and I was very happy with that. I didn't study the math, because I didn't end up having time and it's my worse subject so I really have to just dedicate myself to taking that test on it's own. I missed the science by 6 points, which stinks but I didn't study as much for it as I did for the social studies and language arts. My social studies score was very high and I know it's because of this book. It laid out history really well and was very interesting to read too. I do love social studies though. Language arts I passed by 12 points, so I felt good there too. I'll use this book to study for retaking my math and science. I have complete faith that I'll be able to pass both of them the next time. I'll update this review after I complete the next round.

Ummmm, well I think it was cool reviewing the Math, that's mainly what I have been focusing on. But there are a lot of typos and math errors, where I've had to second guess myself and check out the right answer somewhere else. If you aren't sort of solid on your subjects, this book could do some damage. Oh yeah, there was a Social Studies error too: it said the Tropic of Cancer was in the southern hemisphere. I read that and was like, huh, is it? That could make someone lose an answer!! Math example: "A rectangular prism is comprised of squares" ummm..... not exactly the right answer. I gave it a 3 because it is easy to read... not sure if I'll pass with this thing though!!! OMG

This book covers more content and has been more helpful than the more expensive books I have used for my preparation for praxis 5001. However, it has more information no is necessary for the exam and some information is very lightly covered. I think it is a bit out of date compared to the contents of the actual praxis 5001. However, it is well worth the price compared to the others that cost $40 and had much less content coverage.My advice for using this book is to have the exam content guide from praxis as a reference when using this book, so you don't waste time reading a bunch of needless information. This content guide is available at the ETS website.

I purchased this book to help me with the Praxis II Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects (5031) test and held on to it while I was finishing the semester. At the end of the semester, I went to register for the test and found out the only date left for the test in my area was in five days and I was very worried.So I used the book and took the diagnostic test along with studying all four subjects (reading/language, math, social studies, and science). My state requires at least 165 in reading/language and math, 155 in social studies, and 159 for science. I scored no lower than 175 in all subjects and even got 197 on social studies. This book helped immensely in refreshing me on concepts that are taught in elementary education and I am extremely happy I had it during crunch time to take my test.Only gave it a four stars because there are a few typos I noticed in the book along with it being spotty in some areas like ESL concepts in the reading/language area. Other than that, it helped a ton and is worth the price.

In all fairness, nothing I believe can adequately prepare you for this test. I donâ€™t believe the Praxis practice tests even give an honest glimpse, This I guess is about as good as you are going to get for preparing. I honestly donâ€™t believe it helped me that much but I didnâ€™t have enough time to really review all the content. If you took the time to read everything and take all the practice tests it might be of some value.

This book helped me to not only pass the 0014 Elementary Ed Content Knowledge exam, it helped me to score so high as to qualify for the coveted Recognition of Excellence award by scoring a 191 out of 200. Now, that is not to say that just by purchasing this book you'll have the same good fortune, but there were topics covered in both the mathematics, reading, and social studies sections of this book that saw first-hand on the test and would have missed without reviewing them here. Definitely worth every penny!

I was concerned about this book since it is a big older and I accidentally purchased it for the Praxis 5018 test. However, the terms and content covered in this book were very closely aligned to what was on the actual test. I took a few online free tests, but otherwise, used this primarily as my study guide. I passed with flying colors well above the required score.

This book changed my perspective on a lot of things. I am an anthropologist and I know the importance culture plays in the perspectives and actions of people. But, if you don't understand a culture, you aren't going to understand the person...you will just be frustrated and confused and eventually settle on 'never understanding' them. But when you get a glimpse of the 'why' by exploring aspects of their native culture, light bulbs begin to illuminate your perspectives. This book does this very thing, but with the person and culture of Jesus the Messiah! Amazing! I would recommend this book to anyone, Christian or non-Christian. It has powerful and profound insights to many stunning realities of Jesus' actions and the correlations to ancient and modern Jewish culture. Read this! You'll benefit from it, I promise!

The writers of this book present fascinating insights into Jewish culture and language of Jesus time, and even middle Eastern culture that persists to this day - all of which informs our reading of the New Testament. Reading and interpreting the Bible from and Western, Industrialized, Educated, Rich and Democratic mindset will always bring questions that cannot be answered, and interpretations that are not really what Jesus meant. I highly recommend this book, and other books by Lois Tverberg.

I learned so much reading this book and it's follow up Walking in the dust of Rabbi Jesus which I unknowingly read first. I highly recommend reading both! I'm currently on a journey learning the true Hebrew meaning behind the Scriptures and these two books will give you greater and more in depth understanding of Jewish life and customs. Now I wanna go back and read Jesus words with the more Hebrew understanding I have learned.

I really had no idea what to expect from this book, as I just stumbled upon it while browsing through Kindle books. I was sure in for a surprise. I have been reading the Bible (front to back numerous times) most all of my life. I have read dozens of books trying to explain what this means; what that means; who was Moses; who was David; was Jesus the messiah, etc.?This book has been as close to a religious experience as I've ever had in my life. Every page taught me something new about a subject I thought I already understood just because I have read the Bible so many times. But like most of us, sometimes (probably most of the time) when we finish reading a chapter, verse, or book of the Bible, we walk away wondering just what exactly it all meant (even reading an NIV or King James Study Bible).I am happy to say that this book has been a treasure trove of enlightenment as far as a much better understanding of the Bible. Most of it being a better understanding of what Jesus said, and what he meant. Ann and Lois have crafted a one of a kind "Study Guide" for those of us who want to better understand the Bible and what Jesus was saying in the context of the times, and as a practicing Jew. He wasn't just a Rabbi, he was 'The Rabbi'. As the living word of God, his teachings were not an interpretation of the Bible, they were the exact meaning of the Bible. But unlike most books I've read on Biblical interpretation, this book is written from the standpoint of Jesus, as a Jew, practicing Judaism in his life 2,000 years ago.Do you know exactly what Jesus' words meant when he spoke to the multitude? I can just about guarantee that you really don't. But after reading this book you will!
