About the Author
John L. Fiala (1924–1990) introduced 78 lilac cultivars, wrote a definitive encyclopedia on lilacs, and founded the International Lilac Society. He significantly improved the color and performance of these plants. For his hybridizing achievements he was awarded the Thomas Roland Medal in 1980 by the Massachusetts Horticultural Society.

This book is quite complete showing all the available lilac cultivers up to the time of printing. Large clear pictures show most every variety and explains in detail the different types of flowers, petals, etc. Also included are diseases and problems pests also with clear illustrations or pictures and suggestions for treatment. This book showed me just how much I didn't know about lilacs and I felt as though I had read everything I could find online. Very happy with my purchase!
This is THE bible for lilac cultivars, history, propagation. Excellent photographs and descriptions worth researching before seeking out and purchasing lilacs. Valuable for commercial cut flower growers and avid gardeners. You will find many cultivars that are not at the "five and dime" garden centers but available from mail-order with some on-line searching. When I see an unfamiliar lilac advertised, I check it out with this book to see its strengths, weaknesses, final height and width, as well as "true" color and flower form.
Indispensable for the lilac collector, grower, retailer, or garden club. Photos of darn near every variety known to man....the photos are worth the cost of the book, and the history & genealogy of every lilac is useful for those of us in the growing business.My only criticism is the photos are so often taken in bright sunlight, rather than in overcast conditions. Harsh light makes it difficult to appreciate the subtle difference in hue of, say, 'Monge' and 'Pocahontas' lilacs. And if you've dealt with a president emeritus of the local garden club, you know how important that is!
I was so pleasantly surprised to find a hard cover book rather than a soft cover book when I opened the box. The photography is beautiful. Haven't had time to read anything much yet but looking forward to it. It arrived in perfect condition.
