This book was a huge disappointment.I'm a big fan of George Martin's, but if you're looking for insight into his work with the Beatles, this book barely scratches the surface. He not only gives the Beatles short shrift -- writing about mostly other artists and pursuits -- but he doesn't even talk about any of their albums after Sgt. Pepper's!Plus -- and this has made me lose some respect for Sir George -- he takes credit for others' ideas and innovations, such as engineer Geoff Emerick's brilliant engineering and editing job that made John Lennon's dream of combining two radically different versions of Strawberry Fields together as a cohesive unit in the same key and tempo. He also claims credit for Ringo's suggestion of using half an orchestra (to save money) for A Day In The Life, Paul's piano chord idea for the end of that same song...He also lies about his role in taking John Lennon up on the roof of Abbey Road when John was having a bad trip on LSD, and then leaving Lennon up there by himself, which could have ended up in John's death. Martin claims he escorted Lennon back down and never left him. The truth is far different -- as reported by Paul, George and Emerick. John could have fallen off the roof. The others, upon seeing Martin return to the studio without John and finding out he'd left John on the roof, ran to the roof to bring John back and drive him home. Martin was clearly not owning up to his goof.I still love George but this dishonest and somewhat narcissistic and Beatles-lacking book is above everything else is a big snooze, lacking in detail and insights.I just read another book on the Beatles, however, which is absolutely fabulous -- the best of the many I've read. It's by their engineer, the man who not only recorded Sgt. Peppers, but contributed greatly to the overall sound and creativity. That's Geoff Emerick's Here, There and Everywhere.I actually gave both books as a Christmas gift to a friend but after I discovered how poor and disingenuous George Martin's book was, I told my friend I wouldn't blame him if he only read Emerick's book, which is full of one revelation after another. And I daresay your opinion about the individual Beatles will likely change after reading that one -- some for the better, some for the worse.

It is George Martin's account of his personal history were are talking about here. And the writing, I can hear Martin's voice throughout.I should note this book has a lot more to it than the Beatles. If expecting a book about the Beatles, prepare yourself to be disappointed. Rather this book is a history of all sorts of wonderful quirky people told in the delightful and, at times humorous, charming fashion by Martin himself.

Excellent, revealingWhat fun! George Martin gives intimate insights to his work with the Beatles and other prominent groups such as the Bee Gees. The Beatles were so blessed to have him as their producer: with his musical background I believe they learned bits from him about musical composition that they probably never would have learned from another producer. Yet, as he says, their creativity was the engine and every time they came back to make a new recording, he was astonished at the growth. Certainly his other groups, while good to very good, did not flourish creatively to the extent the Beatles did. This is a fine read to add to your collection of must-have Beatles lore, and it was authored within a few years of his working with them.

I was hoping for a lot about the Beatles, but in the end, the information about recording, sound and music was even more interesting. For example, he pointed out that the delays in various recording spaces varied and were conducive to different kinds of music. The long delay in a cathedral was conducive to choirs, for example. There was an interesting discussion of the well-tempered scale. A decent and interesting man and an enjoyable book.

What a huge disappointment when I received this book and could not even read it!! The quality of the pages and book was at best-- like a childs school work book!! The printing on what would be equated to as recycled paper was poorly printed and the photos where horribly printed dark and a lot unreconizable as well -- some pages and pictures were even faded and this was a new book. Martin Press Books-- should be ashamed of doing this to anyones book!! What a piece of trash.

Lots of info on British stars of the 50s-60s that meant nothing to me; if you are after Beatles info, better to read Geoff Emerick's book. I skipped a lot of this.

If you are looking for insight to the Beatles, their lives and music, there are a lot of other books, and let's face it...George Martin was the "mentor, teacher, and icon" for the boys who really admired the work he did with the Goons when they were children. So although they worked together closely and George was part of the early "inner circle" he was not really privy to the boys private lives and inspirations, kind of an inner outsider who became their "musical errand boy" in other words, "George, make it happen." I believe the flaws in this book include a lack of insight to his developing creative relationship with Paul McCartney at the time of Pepper that really changed music and society in general, and the intense focus on his tragic EMI relationship that I also found disturbing but not surprising. But these are things that shaped history and provide Beatle fans with other pieces of the puzzle. If you want the inside look at George Martin's life before and after the boys, this is the only game in town and worth a read...which only required a few hours.

This is not a book about the Beatles, although they are a major part of it as they played a major part in George Martin's life. It is about life and show biz. Writing style is enjoyable and if you are an artist you should enjoy the bits about the creative process...
