I am writing this review from memory since somehow, someway I have not been able to figure out, and have searched even by partially cleaning out my truck, I misplaced the well marked and underlined book. The study has the appearance of what appears to have have been, in some form, a study with an original purpose of a Ph.D. dissertation, revised and reconstructed. The author has a background of coming of age as a small town girl, plus a likely hands on agricultural history which I suspect mirrowed the form of community that used to be representative of America. She basically interviews various people as to how they have been affected and effected by a nuclear power plant in Southeast Georgia. The people contacted were not sought out by any sampling technique suitable for tests of significance. She examines, inter alia, her interactions with the people interviewed, and generalizes that the combination of "for profit" private enterprise enabled by government muscle" (such as theft by eminent domain for economic development (e.g., I suspect like a parking lot for Trump casino ). She did her doctoral level work at a highly respected and historically significant sociology department at the University of Wisconsin (a department which does sociology by actual research). Sociology, in Albert H. Hobbs' expression , is the academic expression of the enlightenment. It is a discipline that has a plethora of screwballs, sprung preachers, and progressive world changers, with an historical exception here and there (e.g., Hobbs, Pitirim Sorokin, Carl Zimmerman, Robert Nisbet, MIke Adams (contemporary), Ernst van de Haag), but Dr. Ashwood-Pendergrast does not appear to be a total idiot. She has a professional and I suspect an intrinsically personal interest in what is happening in the rural world and its integration into mass society, is a marvelous writer and researcher, and she makes herself acquainted relevant facts that that she shows the background out of which the processes she artfully writes about emerge, and does so with admirable intensity. I suspect a background in journalism helped. If she had a random sampling and drew conclusions with whatever degree of probability, I don't know what she would have found as to the attitudes of persons living in the area, or what inferences might be drawn from such a sample. I do not know what she might have found about attitudes and variables among different categories of people. But, as it is, her book is a marvelous account of significant participant observer research. Nor, do I know how such activities as the focus of her attention speaks as to why government is losing the trust of rural american, nor whether "rural America" still exists as a separate category. She is a professor at what was Alabama Polytechnic Institute, which in my days of coming of age in the 1950s where the Tennessee River makes its southermost dip into north Alabama, "war eagle" was a well know cry, and the announcer of the football games of the Auburn Plainsmen would greet listeners with greetings from "sweet Auburn, the loveliest village of the plain." Dr. Ashwood doubtless is one of the rising stars of the discipline, and of the university on the "loveliest village of the plain."
