I was given an ARC of this novel in exchange for a fair and honest review, which follows. NB Possible spoiler alert.I found this to be such an uplifting book. I don't think I'd be giving much away with a brief outline as a recommendation of authors' skill in building tension and weaving science and Christianity around an adventure story of a young persons' search for herself, her family and ultimately much deeper secrets to the universe. There's young Jasper, lost in a sea confusion and self justification as young people can be, until Jonah the leader of the translucents steps forward as her protector / guardian angel. On their journey together, Jaspers eyes are opened to the ways of the universe, she is symbolically baptized and takes communion with the "old man". She is given an insight into the secret ways of the expanding universe (clever how this was written in) and prepared to stand up to the Prince of Darkness. The author has done a great job of describing young Jasper's character, her insecurities in a family of gifted achievers and her sense of loss. It's all in here and it works, on a fantasy adventure level and on a spiritual level. Very descriptive and very rewarding.
Confronting the Darkness is the story of a young girl named Jasper who, after having a terrible argument with her family, runs into the woods to escape. She has feelings of isolation and guilt though, and slips into a strange sort of dream, or a different plane of reality. She is accompanied by a kind man named Jonah who is more than he appears to be.She is looking for her family, but she is discovering the nature of the universe. Along her journey, a Christ like figure appears to her, as well as devil archetype, and she realizes she must choose a side. The writing is this book is engaging and descriptive. I really liked the character of Jasper, and though she was young, she was easily relatable. This type of fantasy with spiritual overtones is unlike any other book I have read. I would love to see more conversations between Jasper and the spiritual figures she encounters. Fun and quick read!
This intriguing read is a lesson for young adults about learning to see one's self differently. The author bases her authority as the narrator for this morality play on an actual personal experience. It is an fascinating story about a young, restless girl who is caught up in an amazing journey. She walks along in her corporeal body, away from her mysteriously silent and uninhabited neighborhood, to a transcendent world where the universal conflicts of the spiritual world play out in a metaphorical battle between good and evil, with the soul of the young heroine as the prize. As the reader, you are encouraged to think of it as a self-help guide for discovering the inspiration that is hidden within the person you know, to become the person you can become, the person you are meant to be.Once I had suspended my everyday skepticism, as any devout reader must do to appreciate almost every fictional work, I was able to appreciate the message of the story up to the point where the author began to expound on science and cosmology. I could even accept the young girl's naive description of the cosmic insight that was revealed to her. However, I had trouble accepting that an adult scientist would accept her insight as the answer to life, the universe, and everything. I got past that issue and enjoyed the rest of the story once I decided to accept that the scientist, in the glow of the young girl's obvious state of inspired enlightenment, also suspended his everyday skepticism.
This book is a nice merging of the physical and the metaphysical into story about a young girl seeking trying to find her place in the world. It is a high fantasy in the same vein as Tolkien and Lewis and is a really enjoyable read. Sarah Tun creates a universe for protagonist that forces her to grow and to to find her place in the sun. The conflicts in the plot quickly put flesh on the characters and through them, the characters and the plot grow symbiotically. This book is a great read for tweens to those well over their teen years.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The pace was excellent, made me want to keep reading! I was engaged right from the beginning, it took no time at all to get "right into the story". The good/evil battle that goes on everywhere every day was portrayed in a manner that could be understood by the young teen as well and enjoyed by the mature reader. It made me very mindful that sometimes we need to watch our words....."I wish they would leave me alone". This is one book I will treasure and not forget for a long long time. I think part of the concept will stay with me forever. Great job Sarah.....I can't wait to read the sequel :)
A fiction book that makes you think, not too heavily Christian, so I enjoyed it - very much a book of defined 'good' and 'evil'. You follow the main character, Jasper, and her journey as she grows. I recommend it :)
Sarah Tun has written an imaginative story that works to intersect science and the spiritual realm. It was an entertaining read and fun a dive into a parallel universe/reality. The young protagonist, Jasper, grows from an insecure little girl who doesn't understand her place in her own family to a confident young lady who embraces the role she's meant to play. As a reader I enjoyed accompanying her along that ride and look forward to reading more by this author!
Jasper has got under my skin and I want to find out what happens next. This story is unusual, uplifting, unique, unsettling and invigorating. I couldnt stop until I finished it because it seemed to speak to me personally and I can immediately think of several people who will love it too. Highly, highly recommended.
