From the Back Cover

"In Cascades, Greg Satell delivers an essential guide to navigating and driving change in today's disruptive environment. I wish he had written it years ago. It would have reinforced our need to not only to have the right strategy but to manage the entrenched forces working against it."John Antioco, former CEO of Blockbuster Video and Chairman of RED Mango  "Greg Satell's Cascades is among the most useful, engaging, and well-crafted books ever written on how to start and sustain large-scale change. Satell does a masterful job of weaving cases, stories, and evidence to illustrate the nuances of his simple formula--small groups, loosely connected, but united by a common purpose―and to show when and how leaders can use these elements to spread ideas and change organizations for the better."Robert Sutton, Stanford Professor and bestselling author of Good Boss, Bad Boss and Scaling Up Excellence "One of the great puzzles of history is how enduring business, political, and social orders can crumble without warning, seemingly overnight. In Cascades. bestselling author Greg Satell lucidly combines insights from network science, historical case studies, and his own experience living through Ukraine's Orange Revolution in 2004, to deliver a thought provoking account of this profound phenomenon. Cascades is essential reading for policy makers, business leaders and social activists alike." Duncan J. Watts, author of Six Degrees "Greg Satell really understands movements―how they arise and what makes them succeed or fail. What makes him unique is his ability to show how the principles apply beyond the political sphere to organizations, industries, and society as a whole." Srdja Popović, Executive Director of Centre for Applied Nonviolent Action and Strategies (CANVAS), Co-Founder of Otpor!, and author of Blueprint for Revolution  "The complex nature of modern day counterterrorism taught us that defeating threat networks requires a hybrid structure of network and hierarchy. In Cascades, Satell walks us through the impacts that networks are having in other spaces, and shows us that it is often small groups with the ability to interoperate with other small groups that are the key to driving change. For those hoping to deepen their understanding of the current state of play, Cascades is a must read!"  Chris Fussell, President of McChrystal Group and bestselling author of One Mission and Team of Teams (with General Stanley McChrystal) "In Cascades, you will learn how to create a successful movement, while avoiding pitfalls along the way. Throughout the book, Greg makes the case that the principles of great movements throughout history can empower you to create change in your own life, community, and company."Dan Schawbel, bestselling author of Back to Human, Promote Yourself, and Me 2.0 "Creating change today requires more than a strategy, but a deep understanding of how information flows through networks and ecosystems to affect behavior. Greg Satell has a real talent for explaining the science behind networks and how it affects events in the real world in a way that is fun, engaging, and powerful."AnnaLee Saxenian, Dean and Professor at UC Berkeley School of Information and author of Regional Advantage and The New Argonauts  "I wish I had this book when we started our movement to improve STEM education in America! Cascades promises to be an essential guide for anyone who wants to create meaningful change in the world."Talia Milgrom-Elcott, Executive Director and Co-Founder of 100Kin10 "Cascades provides a powerful blueprint for corporate change that leverages lessons learned from social movements around the world and throughout history. This book will forever change your perception of change and how to make it happen." Stephen Shapiro, Author of Best Practices are Stupid "Ready to reboot your company culture? Create something new? Leaders in organizations large and small will find an important blueprint for how to fail at starting a movement and how to inspire the kind of change that makes history in Greg Satell's Cascades. A must read for all innovators and daring organizers."Lu Ann Cahn, 8-time Emmy award winner and author of I Dare Me "The test of an excellent book on a leadership topic is its ability to give profound insight on daily situations that help leaders to do their jobs better. I had many "aha!" moments reading this book but my favourite idea is the notion of "keystone changes" (in Chapter 4). What a genius concept! I have tried this idea out with several work teams and all of them have moved forward in their thinking and practice as a result. We are joining the ranks of Gandhi and the salt march, votes for women, and the same-sex marriage movement in finding a common cause that a diverse group of people can unite behind. The difference between tactics that work for social movements and tactics for contemporary organisations is actually not that great."Helen Bevan, Chief Transformation Officer at NHS Horizons (National Health Service of England)

I received this book specifically to write a review. That said, I try to be honest and open in all my reviews.Bottom-line Up-front, this is the best organizational change book that I have read in the past five years.Greg Satell has written a deep, well researched, well thought out book that explores the mechanics of transformational change in the Internet era.One of my favorite aspects of this book is that Greg gives credit where credit is due (e.g., General McChrystal), but he is willing to counter incorrect and illogical theories even from very popular authors (e.g., Malcolm Gladwell). The first portion of the book talks about what successful transformational movements look like. This portion of the book is loaded with practical examples that most of the readers will have some personal knowledge of. Greg debunks the "Tipping Point" idea that you have mavens, connectors, and salesman. A few people will tend to have little effect.Instead the key to a transformational change, a cascade, is having a rock solid goal that is palatable to the larger population and then pushing the idea through a loosely coupled network, gathering more support at each stage. This is why movements like Occupy failed. There was not a basic change goal, and the antics of the protestors were not palatable to the greater public. On the other hand, movements like the Eastern European rainbow movements, the Civil Rights movement in the US, etc. had fundamental, achievable goals, and the manner of gathering support was polite, but firm discourse. In addition to the well-researched theory and practical examples, the book has some powerful graphics that illustrate the key points in the book. All in all, if you are a leader seeking to lead change or a student of successful political movements then this is a must read book for you.I give this book my highest recommendation.

The author, who has lived in Soviet Bloc countries including Ukraine in Eastern Europe for fifteen years, is the co-CEO of KP Media, which puts out publications like Korrespondent and Kyiv Post, which covered the Orange Revolution and helped bring about political change. He points out that few in his media circle saw the revolution coming, (though his girlfriend at the time did), which started him wondering just why. "Cascades," is the result of much research and interviews with CEOs and other individuals that may make it easier to accomplish lasting change in various fields for everyone.Examples of successful movements include the Serbian Resistance movement Otpor (as opposed to Occupy Wall Street), Netflix (which triumphed over Blockbuster though not initially), Gandhi's Salt March, and the sit-ins and bus strikes of the civil tights era in America. While discussing these, the author has no hesitation when it comes to criticizing current liberal sacred cows like Black Lives Matter, which might raise a few hackles. However, I frequently found myself agreeing with his conclusions, even when I had sympathy for a particular cause. To begin with, it helps to establish a clear vision of what you want to accomplish. Humor was key in the Otpor movement, which was started by admirers of comedians like Monty Python. For example, they engaged in street theater in which they allowed passers-by to whack a barrel with Milosevic's face on it - something that couldn't easily be stopped without looking foolish.Identifying what the author dubs Pillars of Support and forming connections within (networks not hierarchies) is also important. Another key to a successful movement is to identify its core values then see how they tie into the leader's vision. Also (surprise, surprise) listening to the other side helps greatly, as opposed to trying to preach or impose one's views on others. As the author notes, movements that cater only to the faithful are doomed to fail.As Alinsky pointed out, every revolution inspires a counter-revolution. An example is Proposition 8 in California which drew such a backlash that it helped galvanize supporters of the gay rights movement and others who might not otherwise have supported overturning it. At last, same sex marriage became legal as a result of engaging sympathetic allies.Contrary to popular belief, the author argues, figureheads of movements such as Gandhi, (previously a socially awkward law student) don't just gather followers automatically, but begin as ordinary individuals whose future stardom would not have been predicted. Some, as Shakespeare might have said, have stardom thrust upon them. Which is good news for readers of this book. As the author points out, it doesn't take a special person to change the world, but is an option available to us all, particularly if we keep these tenets in mind.Overall, there is some repetition of ideas in "Cascades," which could have been trimmed, but there is still much food for thought.

This isn't bad per se but simply lacks any type of impact. Much is plain common sense and the rest is opinion with a significant sprinkle of self-congratulatory examples scattered throughout. Entirely underwhelmed.
